1969 Triumph T120 Bonneville 1st Startup After Blown Out Spark Plug Head Repairs

FINALLY we have weather here in North Alabama conducive to painting a car. Lower than usual temps, very low humidity. I didn't think we'd get this until mid to late September in this area! 2 coats of SpeedKote epoxy sealer primer. I'm sure I made mistakes, I usually do. But after sanding the entirety of the car, that had been stripped, with 150 and 180 grit 3M Cubitron disc, on my DA sander, I ...

Or worse, having it slip off your valve springs and shoot the keepers and springs out into your neighbor's yard ?? Try this and see if it works for you. It did for me.

    Good job JohnnieBravo1. I rode & built 650 Triumphs for years in the late 80's into the late 90's. "They make fine mechanics out of ordinary men." I had a spark plug blow out on me once while riding down the road. I pulled the head & heli-coiled it. Those exhaust spickots always stripped out on me. I think the best way to prevent it (if you can) is make sure your pipes are secured really good. I used to just hose clamp drag pipes to the bottom of the frame. I knew better, but I was young & didn't give a shit. One time I drilled a couple of small holes in the fins & secured them with a couple of springs like a dirt bike. I had hoards of parts at the time & just did every thing I could to keep them running. By the way, Dale Sweger's channel sent me here. I think we're both impressed by your work.

      Hey Todd. Thank you so much for stopping in! Dale is The Motorcycle Engine Whisperer, isn't he? I have a 58 Norton Nomad, my Uncle gave me back in 1971, and that began my engine mechanicing edumacation. Being able to rebuild an engine was a requirement for owning and riding British bikes. Seems like I had to spend about 2 months working on it for every 5 minutes I got to ride it. Plus needing a chase car to pick up all the parts that vibrated off it. I still have that bike, and am planning on putting it all back together.

    Hello! I'm currently chasing an electrical issue in my 89 on the power seat/power door lock circuit. I'm fairly certain I have a similar issue that you had here, but I can't get the stupid fuse block out. How did you pop it out of the dash, was there a trick to it? Thanks!

    • @JohnnieBravo1
      @JohnnieBravo1 3 дня назад

      Hey Michael; getting that thing out will lead you to yell lots of bad words, and possibly to drinking. Some of the wires going to the back side of it were very tight, but I pulled them "just" hard enough to not pull them out.. On mine, the glove box and all plastic surrounds were removed. I'm going from memory here (dangerous at best), is the fuse block has two catch tabs, one on each side, that have to be popped out. I think I had to try to press the sides of the fuse block inwards to relieve pressure on the tabs, and it comes out towards the front. I'd go look at mine for you to be sure, but it's all papered and plastic'ed up for paint prep, and I can't get to the inside of it right now. In fact today I'm in the middle of sanding and body work. If you need a simplified explanation of what all that fuse goes to, take a look at Bravo School video. I apologize up front for lousy lighting and sound, but I think it should make that circuit more clear.

    Ive never gotten any torque out of dc treadmill motors. Used all the way up to 3hp rated treadmill motors with various speed controllers and pulleys and flywheels.. either it will take forever to get up to the slower speed with a big weighted flywheel or itd just bind up and stop the motor at lower speeds. If i used a bunch of gearing it might work but having to align all that on any kind of budget just kills the project for me.. tried bandsaws and drill presses but both require lower speeds for metals and its just too much to get the torque out of em..

    14:25 I'll say this. You tightened the crankshaft/counter weight pinch bolt... But you assumed the rod bearing pinch bolt was tight from the factory.... We all know about assumptions... I'll add one more lessons learned moment. You struggled to identify the head orientation every time. In the future give yourself a witness mark. Could be as simple as a line down the side with a sharpie, or paint pen, or a scratch with a screw driver, dimples with punch. Add the witness mark before disassembly. I constantly leave myself bread crumbs so I can get out of my self created situations.

    • @JohnnieBravo1
      @JohnnieBravo1 2 месяца назад

      Hey Failure: Thank you for visiting my little channel. Yeah, I should have put witness marks in so I didn't have to figure it out, after doing it backwards. But seeing how the reed valves work, it made sense after I did it backwards. On the rod pinch bolt, this new rod did not have one. Different design, where the bearing is pressed into the rod. I think that must be why there was a block of metal cast into the rod near the piston, so it would weigh the same as the old rod with the pinch bolt bosses, and equal the counterbalance.

Running out of air in the middle of a panel is just not worth my time. Not to mention if you can't maintain consistent air your metalic will lay down different. As for videos... Meh do your thing. • @JohnnieBravo1
      @JohnnieBravo1 3 месяца назад

      Hey Ken; I have a larger 5hp 60 gal oiled compressor in my other shop, Charge Air by DeVilbis. It is remarkably quieter, with more cfm. I do not have an air cooler/dryer on it, yet, but that's on my bucket list. Water vapor coming out of it right now makes it unusable for paint, but good for power tools if I keep them oiled up. I'm seriously considering installing a condenser to get that water vapor issue under control.

    • @Failure_Is_An_Option
      @Failure_Is_An_Option 2 месяца назад

      If I were working in the basement I'd build an outdoor compressor shack and plumb a pex line into the basement. Quincey makes some quiet compressors. All about reducing the pump RPM. 240v is the way to go. I don't know how many RPM these Craftsman machines run... but it's all of them.

      Highly discourage Superclean on raw aluminum. Sodium hydroxide converts aluminum into sodium aluminate. Same applies to Purple Power, and especially Zep Industrial Purple Degreaser. You know the reaction is occurring if the part starts off gassing (hydrogen). The surface will have a dull grey appearance after exposure. It is an exothermic reaction so it is possible to achieve burn level temperatures if a person leaves an aluminum component soaking.
